Larijani: Iran Spares No Effort to Maintain National Unity in Iraq

TEHRAN, Jan 10 (ICANA) – Iran is resolved to help maintain national unity and restore stability in Iraq, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said in a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Barham Salih.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has spared no effort to maintain national unity and establish tranquility in Iraq and pursues Iraq's progress in its neighborhood along with security and welfare for the Iraqi people," Larijani said in Tehran on Sunday night.

He referred to the good relations between Iran and Iraq, and said, "Numerous historical, religious and cultural commonalities of the two nations have drawn the two countries closer more than ever and there are serious motives for the development of bilateral political, economic, cultural and trade relations."

Larijani also called for an increase in economic and trade exchanges between the two countries in an effort to remove impediment to the expansion of bilateral relations.

"Boosting economic and trade exchanges and removing barriers to the development of the relations between the two neighboring countries are highly important for forging real convergence," he said.

Iran and Iraq have enjoyed growing ties ever since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, during the 2003 US invasion of the Muslim country.

Both sides are working on a series of plans to take wide strides in the expansion of their ties, in economic fields in particular, by the routine reciprocal visits by the two countries' officials.

Salih, heading a politico-economic delegation, arrived in the Iranian capital city of Tehran on Saturday.

Further strengthening of ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kurdish region is reportedly the main goal of the trip.
